Statewide Certified Development Corporation is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization that supports economic development by making available low cost, fixed rate commercial and industrial real estate financing to expanding small businesses under the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) 504 Loan Program. We are licensed and regulated by the U.S. Small Business Administration to provide SBA 504 financing and work in partnership with a wide range of lending institutions.

Position Summary: The Senior Underwriter performs the following main roles and other miscellaneous functions:

The Senior Loan Underwriter plays a critical role in the SBA 504 lending process, partnering closely with Business Development Officers (BDOs) to assess loan eligibility, perform in-depth credit analysis, and prepare comprehensive loan packages for submission. This role is ideal for an experienced financial analyst or underwriting professional with a foundation in commercial credit and an interest in advancing within the commercial real estate finance sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Loan Prequalification & Eligibility Review – Serve as a key resource for BDOs by evaluating borrower eligibility and SBA 504 program compliance. Participate in client meetings as needed to provide underwriting expertise and guidance on loan structure.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration – Work cross-functionally with internal loan officers, borrowers, lenders, and brokers to ensure transparency and progress throughout the loan lifecycle.
  • Financial Analysis & Prequalification – Analyze borrower financial statements, prepare financial spreads, and assess repayment ability to pre-qualify loan applicants in accordance with SBA standards.
  • Credit Memorandum Development – Draft clear, concise, and analytically sound credit memorandums that assess borrower cash flow, collateral strength, management capability, industry risk, and overall creditworthiness.
  • SBA Loan Submission – Assemble and submit complete and accurate SBA 504 loan application packages via E-Tran, ensuring compliance with current SBA SOPs and internal underwriting standards.
  • Problem Resolution & Client Support – Handle complex borrower inquiries and documentation issues with professionalism, leveraging understanding of SBA loan requirements to resolve obstacles and guide clients.
  • Process Improvement – Identify and recommend improvements to underwriting workflows and documentation practices to increase efficiency, consistency, and throughput.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; concentration in Accounting, Finance, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in commercial credit underwriting or financial analysis, with a demonstrated ability to assess complex financial statements and cash flow structures.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and a meticulous attention to detail; capable of drawing insights from nuanced financial data.
  • Highly organized with a proven track record of managing high volumes of documentation, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely analysis.
  • Superior written communication skills, including the ability to draft concise, professional credit memos. Proficient in using AI tools to enhance productivity and streamline repetitive tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to interact effectively with borrowers, partners, and team members.
  • Creative problem solver with sound judgment and a strategic mindset; able to identify risks and structure solutions that protect institutional interests.
  • Team-oriented and flexible, willing to adapt to changing priorities, extended hours, and evolving borrower needs.
  • Professional demeanor, representing the organization with credibility and poise in all internal and external communications.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment, able to multi-task without sacrificing quality, consistency, or regulatory compliance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, with strong aptitude for learning new systems and underwriting platforms.

What You’ll Do

  • Prequalify loan applicants by analyzing borrower financial statements and debt schedules using an established credit methodology.
  • Manage complex documentation requests with a “white glove” approach, ensuring borrowers and lending partners receive attentive, hands-on support throughout the process.
  • Coordinate across stakeholders — keeping Business Development Officers, lending partners, borrowers, and other parties informed with timely updates and proactive communication on loan status and any emerging issues.
  • Process and organize high-volume loan packages, reviewing, categorizing, and securely storing complex documentation.

What We’re Looking For

  • 1–2 years of professional experience in an analyst or underwriter role.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Mathematics — or equivalent hands-on work experience.
  • A genuine interest in commercial real estate or commercial real estate lending.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to build personal systems for managing high- volume, deadline-driven work.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel — a significant portion of this role is Excel-based.
  • Excellent communication skills — you’re comfortable providing updates and coordinating across all levels of the organization.
  • A proactive, flexible mindset. You’re willing to step up and do what’s needed, even when tasks fall outside your core responsibilities.
  • Experience in commercial real estate lending is a plus.
